Your website is often the first impression a customer has of your business. Choosing the wrong web designer can leave you with a slow, hard-to-update site that never shows up on Google. Choosing the right one can give you a steady source of new customers for years.

Use these 12 questions to compare web design companies and make a confident decision.

1. Can I see websites you’ve built for businesses like mine?

A good portfolio shows range and quality. Look for sites in your industry or with similar goals. Click through them on your phone: are they fast, easy to navigate, and clear about what the business does?

2. Will my website be custom or built from a template?

Neither answer is automatically wrong, but you should know what you are paying for. Custom designs are built around your brand and customers; templates are faster and cheaper but less unique.

3. Is SEO included, and what exactly does that mean?

“SEO-friendly” can mean anything. Ask specifically whether they will handle page titles and meta descriptions, heading structure, site speed, mobile optimization, image compression, schema markup, and Google Search Console setup. If they can’t explain it clearly, that’s a warning sign. Learn more about what good SEO services include.

4. Who writes the content?

Content is the most common reason website projects stall. Find out whether copywriting is included, whether they will optimize your content for keywords, or whether you are expected to write every page yourself.

5. Will the site be mobile-friendly and fast?

Most local searches happen on phones, and Google uses mobile performance when ranking sites. Ask how they test speed and whether they aim to pass Google’s Core Web Vitals. Our guide on how to speed up a WordPress website explains why this matters.

6. What platform will you use, and will I be able to edit it?

WordPress powers a large share of the web and gives you full ownership and flexibility. Whatever the platform, make sure you can update text, photos, and blog posts without calling a developer every time. See our comparison of WordPress vs. Wix vs. Squarespace.

7. Do I own the website, domain, and content?

You should own your domain, content, images, and design. Get admin access to your website and hosting. Avoid contracts where the designer keeps ownership and “rents” the site back to you.

8. What is the timeline and process?

Ask for a clear process: discovery, sitemap, design mockups, development, content, review, and launch. A good designer will tell you what they need from you and when.

9. What does it cost, and what’s included?

Get an itemized quote. Confirm the number of pages, revisions, features, and what happens if you need changes later. For typical price ranges, read how much a small business website costs.

10. What happens after launch?

Websites need updates, backups, and security monitoring. Ask whether they offer hosting and maintenance, what it costs, and how quickly they respond to problems.

11. How will you help my website generate leads?

A pretty website that doesn’t produce calls or form submissions isn’t doing its job. Ask how they plan calls-to-action, contact forms, click-to-call buttons, trust signals like reviews, and service pages that convert.

12. Can I talk to a past client?

Reviews and references reveal how a company communicates, handles deadlines, and supports clients after launch.

Red Flags to Watch For

  • Guaranteed “#1 on Google” rankings. No one can guarantee specific rankings.
  • No contract or unclear ownership terms.
  • Extremely low prices with no explanation of what’s included.
  • They can’t show recent work or real client results.
  • They don’t ask about your business goals, customers, or competitors.

Local vs. Remote Web Designers

A local web design company understands your market, can meet in person, and often knows how to rank in your specific city. If you serve customers in a particular region, local SEO knowledge is a real advantage. For example, businesses in Maryland can work with a team that already builds sites for Baltimore, Columbia, Laurel, and surrounding areas.
