Your homepage has a few seconds to convince visitors they're in the right place. Here's how to write homepage copy that earns the call.

Your homepage is often the first page a potential customer sees. Within a few seconds, they decide whether you can help them or whether they should hit the back button. Great design helps, but it’s the words that answer the questions in a visitor’s head.

This guide walks through how to write homepage copy for a small business, section by section.

Before You Write: Know Your Visitor

Answer three questions first:

  1. Who is visiting? A homeowner with a leaking roof, a business owner comparing accountants, a parent looking for a daycare.
  2. What problem are they trying to solve right now?
  3. What would make them choose you over the next result on Google?

Every line on your homepage should speak to that visitor and that problem.

Section 1: The Headline

Your headline should say what you do, who you do it for, and where, in plain language. Clever slogans rarely beat clarity.

Weak: “Excellence in Every Detail.”

Strong: “Roof Repair and Replacement in Columbia, MD, Fast, Honest, and Fully Insured.”

Include your main service and location naturally. It helps visitors and search engines understand the page.

Section 2: The Subheadline

Use one or two sentences to expand on the headline with your key benefit or differentiator: same-day service, fixed pricing, 20 years of experience, or a satisfaction guarantee.

Section 3: A Clear Call to Action

Put your primary call to action right below the headline: “Call Now,” “Get a Free Quote,” or “Book an Appointment.” On mobile, a tap-to-call button is often the most valuable element on the page. Keep the wording specific and low-pressure.

Section 4: Trust Signals

Visitors are asking, “Can I trust this business?” Answer immediately with:

  • Star ratings and short review quotes. See how to get more Google reviews.
  • Years in business or number of customers served.
  • Licenses, certifications, and memberships.
  • Recognizable client logos or “as featured in” mentions.

Section 5: Your Services

List your main services with a short benefit-focused description and a link to each dedicated service page. Service pages help you rank for each service individually, while your homepage acts as the hub.

Section 6: Why Choose You

Explain what makes you different in three to five short points. Focus on outcomes the customer cares about, not internal details. “We show up when we say we will” beats “State-of-the-art equipment.”

Section 7: How It Works

A simple three-step process reduces anxiety: “1. Call or request a quote. 2. We inspect and give you a fixed price. 3. We complete the job and clean up.”

Section 8: Service Area

If you serve a local area, list the cities and neighborhoods you cover. This supports local SEO and reassures visitors. Combine it with a strong Google Business Profile.

Section 9: FAQs

Answer the three to five questions customers ask most, like pricing, timelines, and guarantees. FAQs handle objections and add helpful, keyword-rich content.

Section 10: A Final Call to Action

End with a clear, repeated call to action for visitors who scrolled all the way down.

Writing Tips That Improve Conversions

  • Write like you talk. Short sentences, everyday words.
  • Use “you” more than “we.” Focus on the customer’s needs.
  • Be specific. Numbers and details build credibility.
  • Make it scannable. Headings, short paragraphs, and bullet points.
  • Remove jargon. If a customer wouldn’t say it, don’t write it.

Homepage SEO Basics

Common Homepage Mistakes

  • A vague headline that doesn’t say what you do.
  • No phone number or call to action above the fold.
  • Walls of text about company history.
  • Stock photos instead of real team and project photos.
  • No reviews or proof.
